Honeybees Spotlight: MaQue
By: Hornets.com | September 19, 2011

Hometown: La Place.
Year as a Honeybee: First.

Previous dance experience:

For as long as I can remember, movement and musicality has been a part of my life. In my house, life has been and still is – everything dance! My family still sits and watches old reruns of Soul Train together just to mimic all of the classic dance moves! I have taken classes in tap, lyrical, ballet, hip hop, modern and contemporary. I would love to say that I have a favorite dance style, but I don’t. I love them all, from lyrical to liturgical and from tap to hip hop. I have been a competitive dancer for several years, traveling throughout the country and meeting some of the hottest dancers and choreographers in the world. While competing, I have had some of the most unforgettable experiences such as being named Teen Miss Dance of America for Dance Masters Association to rubbing the log and dancing at the world-famous Apollo Theater televised showcase.

What I love about being a Honeybee:

It’s an amazing opportunity to be a member of the best dance team in the NBA, representing the best team in the NBA. While sitting at the Hive in the stands shouting “Go Hornets,” I dreamed of auditioning and becoming a member of the Honeybees and the New Orleans Hornets family. Just the thought of dancing on the court, where the athletes bust their moves, is such a rush. And like my little sister, Ma Coi, who is a Stinger, said, the Honeybees have the best seat in the house! The greatest team, brilliant leaders, wonderful teammates, loving fans, and the best choreography – what else could a dancer ask for?

What I love about dancing:

I’m in love with dancing – it is just who I am! It’s stimulating, riveting, emotional and beautiful – it awakens even a dull day. Dancing is my life, my souls – it’s what I do. When I am dancing I am able to speak without saying a word and I don’t have to use my “inside” voice. It’s my escape to a journey that is worth sharing!

What I love about New Orleans:

New Orleans just oozes life, from its music, to its food, to the people – it’s hot and it’s sultry. New Orleans is like a favorite song that melts your heart while singing the high note. Where else can you eat a snowball during the summer, while riding a streetcar on your way to the po-boy shop listening to Kermit Ruffin and Theresa Andersson on your IPod? It’s the place where someone always asks ‘how is your mama and ‘em’? It’s the place I call home. I love to love New Orleans.

What I love to do when I’m not performing with the Honeybees:

Aside from dancing, I am also a sophomore and chemistry major at Xavier University. So, studying can keep me quite busy. I also enjoy choreographing, teaching young dancers, acting, cheering, shopping, playing kickball, listening to music and just hanging out with my family and friends.
